FXUS65 KGGW 232117 AFDGGW Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Glasgow MT 217 PM MST Thu Jan 23 2025 .DISCUSSION... KEY MESSAGES: - Another round of light snow and blowing snow is expected this evening through overnight tonight. - Generally warmer and drier conditions will prevail for next week. WEATHER PATTERN OVERVIEW: As the low clouds and flurries from this morning have drifted away and diminished into the Dakotas, partly sunny skies today have been replaced by an approaching thick deck of mid and high level clouds from the Canadian Rockies. Radar reflectivities have already begun to show up, but there is still a shallow dry layer at the surface that has not yet saturated. Beginning this evening, models are in good agreement, showing a lowering of the cloud deck and more saturation in the lowest layers to allow for snowfall to spread from north to south through our region. Similar to the last several precip events for us, most of the snow accumulation will be limited to favored upslope areas, i.e. the Little Rocky Mountains, the Big Sheep Mountains, and the Snowy Belts (1 to 2 inches at most). Otherwise, all other locations in NE Montana can expect a trace to around 0.5 inch of snow through Friday morning. Even though some blowing snow is expected, widespread overall impacts will be minimal and the need for any headline products are not anticipated. Friday will break out to partly sunny skies for western locations, while widespread gusty winds from the NW remain (30-35 mph). Late Friday night, lingering leftover flurries will be possible for a few eastern locations. Beginning Saturday, a more calm and dry weather pattern sets into the region and prevails through the remainder of January. Multiple periods of chinook winds off the Rocky Mountains are expected. Daily high temperatures next Sunday through Wednesday will be above normal. FORECAST CONFIDENCE & DEVIATIONS: High confidence in chances for light snow this evening and tonight.
